A Tarrytown teenager was arraigned December 8 on an indictment charging him with murdering a Sleepy Hollow teen October 9 in Barnhart Park in Sleepy Hollow.
Bernizon Moronta, 16, could face a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison for stabbing Tahj Robinson, 17, multiple times to the torso, causing fatal wounds to the heart and lungs. Both Moronta and Robinson were former students in the Tarrytown School District.
The Westchester District Attorney’s Office said Moronta and others entered Barnhart Park at about 11 p.m. on October 9 with the purpose of locating and injuring Robinson. After police and EMS received a 911 call about the incident they arrived on the scene and found Robinson unresponsive on the ground bleeding from various wounds.
Robinson was taken to Westchester Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 11:54 p.m. Moronta was arrested October 10 by Westchester County Police in a joint investigation with Sleepy Hollow Police.
More than $13,000 was raised from more than 200 donors on a fundraising page set up by an aunt from Robinson to cover his funeral costs.
Following his arraignment, Moronta was taken back to Westchester County Jail in an area for juvenile offenders. He is due back in court on January 5.
