The Rivertowns’ Community News Source

Publishing  our first issue in 2006The Indy, as our news website is known among many of its followers, continues to adhere to its mission of accurately informing  residents of Hastings-on-Hudson, Dobbs Ferry, Ardsley, Irvington, Tarrytown, and Sleepy Hollow about the wide range of activities that affect their daily lives. Impartial coverage of topics that range from government, schools, real estate and business, to sports, social events and personalities, has made us an important and trusted source of information in the rivertowns.

Initially a monthly newspaper with a free circulation mailed to 19,000 households, The Hudson Independent has since 2020 been entirely internet-based. Prior to the pandemic and subsequent lockdown, our website (www.thehudsonindependent.com) served mainly as an archive for stories in the print edition, plus a calendar of local events. It has since  become a full-service platform for news and events, updated on a daily basis. Its Community Bulletin Board is a resource for ongoing community activities, complementing our daily Events Calendar. When significant news breaks, we inform thousands of registered households via email alerts.

Non-Profit, 503(c) Status

In 2022, The Indy transferred all ownership and operations to a new non-profit organization, The Hudson Valley News Foundation (HVNF). Our new tax-exempt status provides us with another way to connect with our readers and advertisers while opening a second income stream, allowing us to receive tax-deductible contributions and grants from those in the community who value us as an objective news source, as well as income from local advertisers.

The only visible change readers see is more timely coverage of news and trends in the rivertowns. The journalism we offer will remain focused on our local communities. Our overall mission is the same; our commitment to objectivity and to the welfare of the communities we serve remains unchanged.

Editorial Independence:

The Hudson Independent strives to adhere as closely as possible to the facts of the stories it publishes without fear of—or favor to—outside interests, including its subjects, its sources, its advertisers and its donors. Our goal is the betterment of the communities we serve. Our means of achieving that goal is a commitment to resolve conflicting information fairly and transparently.

Values:

At The Hudson Independent, we value honesty, transparency, political neutrality and a willingness to correct factual errors when they arise.

Anonymous sources:

While our overall policy is to identify any and all sources of the information we publish, we acknowledge that there are circumstances where otherwise trustworthy sources are willing to share that information only if it is not directly attributed to them and that such information is essential to the overall balance and accuracy of the story. When such anonymity is requested, it is our policy to have the editor(s) know the identity of the source and confirm the veracity of the information to the extent possible.

Policy on correcting errors:

If and when a factual error appears in a published story, the editors will strive first to confirm that it is indeed an error and if so, to correct it and acknowledge it as openly as possible.

Conflict of Interest Policy

We are committed to fair and impartial reporting. Our journalists do not accept gifts or favors from sources, avoid covering stories where personal or financial relationships could influence their work, and do not engage in political activity that could compromise their neutrality. When potential conflicts arise, they are disclosed and addressed to maintain your trust in our reporting.
