In October 2014, the majority of residents in the Irvington School District who turned out at the polls supported a $4.6 million bond, and many of those identified projects were completed during the summer months.
The high profile construction item in the bond was the transformation of Meszaros Field with a new artificial turf that received community approval after two previous failed attempts. The field with organic infill was expected to be ready by the first week of September. Surrounding Oley Track with a new running surface will be open later in the month.
At the Middle School, a new recess section with an artificial turf play area and entry to the school were completed, along with new landscaping.
Some other improvements that were made that could go under the radar were efficient lighting installed in the High School, Middle School, Dows Lane and Main Street gymnasiums. Univent heating units were also put in Dows Lane to help control temperatures in the classrooms. New boiler controls were added at Dows Lane and portions of the High School/Middle School campus, and heating was converted to natural gas at Main Street.
Meanwhile, several other projects and upgrades were completed in July and August with funds included in the 2016-17 district budget.
At Lower Dows Field, which is used primarily for high school athletics practice, recreational sports and Dows Lane physical education classes and recess, a sprinkler system was installed.
The replacement of sidewalks and the reconstruction of an island in front of Maher Gym took place on the High School/Middle School campus; a student restroom in the high school was renovated; and painting was done in many classrooms, corridors and handrails.
