COVID Update, 9/8: Cutting Both Ways

• Bookmarks: 4

September 8, 2020

By Barrett Seaman–

We don’t yet know what will come out of the traditionally festive Labor Day weekend in terms of new Corona cases caused by failure to abide by social distancing protocols. The immediate news from Albany fits with recent patterns: 32 straight days of statewide infections under one percent; record testing and a rigorous watch for outsiders bringing viruses with them from less vigilant states. Four more states—Delaware, Maryland, Ohio and West Virginia—were put on the list requiring a 14-day quarantine when entering the Empire State, while two territories, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands were granted reprieve.

In Westchester, however, the post-holiday news included an uptick of fresh cases. After simmering in the mid-400 range, active cases shot up to 572. On the brighter side, only 28 of the new cases required hospitalization. Moreover, the big scare in Mt. Pleasant last week where two priests and a staffer tested positive, potentially exposing 400, appears not to have materialized…so far. A prompt protocol for testing at Phelps found no infections out of 205 who responded to the call.
