The tax levy increase in the proposed budget for the 2015-16 school year in the Tarrytown School District falls well below the allowable state tax cap.

The $72.57 million budget, which increases spending by 1.92% ($1.36 million) from this year, carries a districtwide average tax hike of .88%. The state tax cap for the district is 6.55%.

Based on equalization rates for the towns of Greenburgh and Mount Pleasant, the estimated tax impacts for property owners in Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow vary significantly. In Sleepy Hollow, taxes are estimated to decrease by 2.2%. However, in Tarrytown, taxes are slated to increase by 3.7%.

School officials cautioned the tax numbers are likely to change by August based on ongoing tax certiorari settlements on total property valuation in both villages.

A public hearing on the budget will be held on May 7. The public vote on the budget and uncontested Board of Education race will take place on May 19.

“I think it’s a responsible budget,” said board President Mimi Godwin, who credited administrators and department heads with requesting barebones funding to run the district’s operations.

The budget includes $689,377 for 14 new staff in the district. Some of the new positions are: a director of curriculum and instruction, kindergarten teacher at John Paulding, special education teacher at Washington Irving, a girls’ tennis coach and a ski coach/advisor.
