Sleepy Hollow Native Coffey Taking Talents Overseas

By Rick Pezzullo—
Sleepy Hollow native Samantha Coffey’s star on the soccer field continues to rise.
The Olympic gold medalist, a graduate of The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, has signed a three-year contract to play with Manchester City in the United Kingdom. It will be the first time the talented midfielder will display her skills outside the United States—other than the Olympics.
“Manchester is not somewhere I’ve been before, but there’s something about it that I felt I was led to and called to,” Coffey said. ““It’s a club with so much history, so much success, so much influence in the city. I think it’s also a place that just has proven its investment in women’s soccer and being a part of this movement that is going on.”
“Seeing the facilities, the support the team gets and all the efforts they are putting in for the women’s side is such a huge and positive side and something I’m honored to be a part of,” she added.
Since 2022, Coffey, 27, has been a standout performer with the Portland Thorns in the National Women’s Soccer League, which she helped lead to the playoff semifinals last year as a club captain.
Coffey was a member of the gold-winning U.S. Women’s National Team at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics.
“Sam’s reputation as one of the world’s best speaks for itself, and we’re delighted she’s chosen to come here ahead of other potential suitors,” said Therese Sjogran, Director of Football for Manchester City. “We believe she has all the qualities needed to thrive at City and, more broadly, the WSL, and we’re excited to see how she can elevate our already superb squad of players.”
“Sam is playing at the top of her game, and I think her decision to come here shows the incredible progress we’ve made as a Club and the ambitions we have moving forward,” Sjogran added.
Last November, Coffey was inducted into the Westchester Sports Hall of Fame, a recognition she cherishes.
“This recognition definitely holds a very special place in my heart because of how proud I am of my roots, and how much I truly love where I’m from. It carries more meaning. I bring New York with me everywhere I go, and I always will,” she told The Hudson Independent.
“I say this often, but I’m incredibly proud to be from Sleepy Hollow, and am still deeply connected to my hometown,” she said. “I hope that my journey can serve as testament and example to other young athletes in the area that it doesn’t matter if you are from a small town on the Hudson River, if you commit yourself every day, dream big, and have the support of the incredible people around you like I did, there is nothing you can’t achieve. I’m truly a product of the community that raised me.”
