A new assistant principal will soon be roaming the halls of Sleepy Hollow High School
Mary Berat was recently appointed to that position. She will be joining the district’s administrative team on July 1.
“Ms. Berat’s experience, leadership, and commitment to students and staff make her an outstanding addition to the Sleepy Hollow High School community,” Superintendent Dr. Ray Sanchez said. “We are excited to welcome her to the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns and look forward to the positive impact she will have on our students, staff, and families.”
Berat brings more than two decades of educational experience in instructional leadership, curriculum development, and student-centered advocacy. Since 2003, she has served the Nyack Public Schools community in a variety of leadership roles, most recently as Department Chair of Social Studies.
In that position, she guided curriculum alignment to New York State standards, facilitated professional development, mentored educators, and collaborated closely with administrators, counselors, and clinical staff to support student success and well-being.
In addition to her departmental leadership, Berat has demonstrated a strong commitment to innovation and equity in education. As Seal of Civic Readiness Coordinator, she developed and implemented a districtwide plan that led to a significant increase in the number of graduating seniors earning the designation.
Berat also served on the district’s AI Initiative Team, helping guide ethical approaches to AI integration through research, pilot programs, and professional learning initiatives. She additionally led districtwide curriculum work as K–12 Social Studies Curriculum Committee Coordinator and has extensive experience coaching teachers in learner-active, technology-infused instructional practices.
She earned a Bachelor of Arts in History with concentrations in Mathematics and Educational Studies from Columbia University, a Master of Arts in the Teaching of Social Studies from Teachers College at Columbia University, and a Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Administration from the State University of New York at New Paltz.
She holds New York State certifications as a School Building Leader, School District Leader, and teacher of Social Studies and Mathematics for grades 7–12.
