The Hastings-on-Hudson Board of Education has appointed Karina Villalona, a longtime Hastings resident, as the new Assistant Director for Special Education, effective July 16.
Selected through a highly competitive search process, Villalona will join the incoming Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Personnel Services’ team and will work in collaboration with MariAngela Sanchez, Assistant Director for Special Education.
“This opportunity is especially meaningful because Hastings is not only the community I will now serve professionally—it is also the community my family calls home,” Villalona said. “As the parent of a Hastings graduate and current rising seniors, I have had the privilege of experiencing firsthand the supportive and dedicated environment that makes this district so special. My children have been both challenged and inspired by exceptional teachers, and I am deeply grateful for those experiences.”
School officials said Villalona has a sophisticated understanding of the importance of inclusive educational systems and the critical connections among general education, special education, ENL services, and student support structures. She also possesses strong knowledge of disproportionality in special education and recognizes the importance of equitable practices and outcomes for all students.
“With nearly 30 years in education—as a teacher, school psychologist, and administrator—I bring a strong commitment to creating an inclusive and encouraging environment for all learners. I am particularly passionate about special education and ensuring that every student has access to a meaningful and individualized educational experience,” Villalona said.
Genieve Holder, newly hired assistant superintendent for business, welcomed Villalona to the district.
“Ms. Villalona brings extensive experience in leading special education initiatives and a thoughtful perspective shaped by her background in school psychology,” said Holder. “Her expertise, compassion, and commitment to inclusive problem-solving will be a tremendous asset to the Hastings community.”
