Film industry veteran Kate Bolger is opening The Village Confectionery at 95 Beekman Avenue. When we first met at Sleepy Coffee Too, Kate was wearing a bright smile and bright blue jacket. She told me about what inspired her to open the store. After a particularly brutal week at work, she decided to take her daughters to a sweet shop, like the ones she remembered from her childhood. When she realized she couldn’t find any near where they lived, the idea of The Village Confectionery was born.Support our Sponsors For Kate, candy is more than just a cheat in a diet or extra sugar; it’s tied to nostalgia, joy and the small moments people remember. “The world started building in my head because of the inherent magic that I think comes with candy,” Kate said. When her sweet shop becomes a reality, it will feature things like Swedish gummies, penny candy, licorice and of course bon bons. While she had worked successfully for 15 years in the film industry, she didn’t know anything about opening a business. As time went on, however, she learned that as long as she persevered, she could reach her goals. She landed on Sleepy Hollow as the location because of its small-town atmosphere and unique personality. As a child she remembered hearing stories about the wailing woman and the Headless Horseman. Kate says she has received nothing but support and positivity from the Sleepy Hollow and Westchester communities, including more than 53,000 followers on Instagram. Kate used her film skills to make charming videos with other local entrepreneurs and characters. “What a dream, gushed one Instagram follower. “Can’t wait to follow your adventures in Sugarland!” Many others have left messages of support and even presents outside the shop. Ironically, the Confectionary replaces a store from the Edible Arrangements chain that offers cut fruit as a healthy alternative to candy. The Confectionary will join a cluster of small, beloved locally owned businesses opened in recent years near the corner of Beekman Avenue and Cortlandt Street, including Sleepy Hollow Bookshop, Sleepy Coffee Too, and Beekman Ale House. When asked where she saw her business in a few years, Kate made it clear that she did not want to franchise. She wants to keep the business in one location to demonstrate the authenticity and personality of the shop and to have made an impact on the community by spreading kindness, warmth, and compassion. “I want there to be a heart and soul of the Confectionery,” she explained. One of her favorite parts of preparing to open her shop was designing the interior of the Confectionery. Choosing not to hire an interior designer, she is doing all the decorating herself because she wanted the store to feel personalized and unique, not trendy or modern. She is inspired by sweet shops from her childhood, Instead of a “cotton candy” color scheme of pastels, she went for warm toffee tones in order to capture the nostalgic feel of her youth as well as the charm of Arthur Avenue in the Bronx. She wants customers to feel like they’re stepping into the past to visit a friend. The Village Confectionery, she hopes, will become a part of someone’s childhood just like the sweet shops from her memories. Judging by reactions in the village, as well as the tens of thousands of Instagram followers, folks can’t wait for this shop to finally open its doors. Everyone wants a taste of what’s inside. Whether you love Swedish gummies, penny candy or licorice, The Village Confectionery will have something for you. As an added enticement, prospective customers can buy a Blueberry Fizz Cap for $48 and get a free bon bon on their first visit. Buy the $72 Toffee Cap and get free bon bons for life: “Wear your Toffee Cap into the shop,” Kate promises, “and not only will you receive a signature bon bon on your first visit, you’ll receive one EACH TIME you enter the shop wearing your cap — not once, not for a year, but for life.” Now that’s a sweet deal!
