With each new home sale, the rivertown villages are increasingly reflecting the migration of folks from the Big City to what realtors in the area refer to as “Brooklyn North” or more broadly as “Hipsturbia.”
Expanding farmers markets, coffee shops, specialty cheese dispensaries all cater to the tastes and habits of a new breed of upwardly mobile Gen X, Y and Z families arriving by the vanload. And they are attracting new businesses.
Take the latest Rivertowns Chamber of Commerce ribbon-cutting at the corner of Main Street and Chestnut in Dobbs Ferry, celebrating the grand opening of Barrel 72, a wine and spirits purveyor specializing in organic wines and additive-free spirits. Founding partners David Algarin, Talles Guimaraes and Seth Levin are exploiting the younger generations’ attention to environmental sustainability and health consciousness by applying it to the wine and spirits business.

“At Barrel 72,” their web site (www.barrel72.com) declares, “we curate clean wines and small-batch spirits from producers who prioritize craft, integrity, and authenticity—bringing a more personal, thoughtful experience to the River Towns.”
The new Dobbs Ferry store is not the first in the villages to enter this market niche. A few years ago, Rachel Tieger opened Savvy Sips on Irvington’s Main Street, selling “earth-friendly” and “bio-dynamic” wines.
For wine lovers not yet prepared to venture into this new wine world, Dobbs Ferry still has Rochambeau Wines at the corner of Cedar and Broadway, where one can find all the classified French Bordeaux and Burgundies as well as California Cabs and Chards. As the French say, “chacun à son goût.”
