The Tarrytown Fire Department was dispatched to 52 Highland Ave. about 4 a.m. on a reported structure fire with one person trapped on the second floor. Heavy smoke and fire from the first and second floors of the two-family home were visible when firefighters arrived within three minutes.Support our Sponsors Between 75 and 100 firefighters from Tarrytown, Irvington and Greenburgh responded and worked tirelessly to try and save the trapped woman, but they were thwarted by heavy fire and a hoarding condition. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family during this difficult time,” Tarrytown fire officials stated. The identity of the deceased individual has not been released. One firefighter was taken to the hospital and treated for heat exhaustion. Firefighters remained on the scene until about 8:30 a.m. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation. “The Village of Tarrytown thanks all neighboring and Westchester County fire, police, ambulance and emergency personnel and jurisdictions that responded and provided mutual aid to this fire scene,” Village Administrator Richard Slingerland stated.
