The Rotary of the Tarrytowns’ annual Rubber Duck Derby raised more than $14,000 that will be returned to the community in the form or grants and scholarships. The Derby on April 25 was held in conjunction with the Family YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day at Patriot’s Park.
With the eighth consecutive “good weather” day for the dual event, hundreds of children and adults flocked to the park to watch the Derby races and enjoy the games, rides and sports presented by the Y.
Total ducks “adopted” for the Derby this year reached 1,690, a number higher than that of last year’s adoptions, but below 2013’s record 1,791. Winners of six preliminary race heats prior to the Grand Final each won $100, and competed in the Grand Final race in which Kathy Weisel’s adopted ducky came in first, winning her the $1,500 grand prize.

In addition to achieving its goal of “Helping families find fun through active play and educational opportunities during Healthy Kids Day,” the YMCA , raised money for its Scholarship Fund. The fund enables children and families, who would otherwise not be able to afford to join the Y, to do so, and it provides financial aid for children to attend summer camp and after school care programs.
