About 70 families in the Tarrytown School District will be enjoying a hearty Thanksgiving meal thanks to the efforts and generosity of a group of students, their families and friends and the RSHM LIFE Center in Sleepy Hollow.

For at least the last 10 years, students at Sleepy Hollow High School, working with the McGovern family, have collected funds to shop for food for needy families identified by the LIFE Center, according to Executive Director Sister Susan Gardella.

The students then prepare care packages that are dropped off at the center a few days before Thanksgiving and then handed out to families, which Gardella noted are mostly Hispanic.
“It’s a great way to get more people involved in the spirit of Thanksgiving,” Gardella said. “It’s a way for people who have a little bit more to reach out to those who have less.”

Gardella said the Giving Thanksgiving program also provides a helping hand to the center as it runs its normal programming and prepares for the Christmas season. The LIFE Center was founded in 1995 by the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary.

Anyone who wants to make a donation to the Giving Thanksgiving effort can send a check to the LIFE Center at 32 Beekman Ave., Sleepy Hollow, NY 10591.
