The Sleepy Hollow Board of Trustees has reversed its decision to make Old Broadway a one-way street.
“We didn’t do it properly first time around,” said Mayor Ken Wray on July 14. “I am instructing the staff to change it back.”
The board voted to remove four parking spaces and change the traffic flow pattern on Old Broadway, which runs from the Heritage Medical Group building to the intersection of Gordon Avenue, parallel to Route 9, last September at the urging of Anthony Landi, who lives at 400 Old Broadway.
At a public hearing, Landi said he was concerned about drive-thru traffic, excessive speeding of cars approaching the Citgo gas station and pedestrian safety. “When there are activities going on, there is no walk/don’t walk sign and it is dangerous for people to cross the street,” he said.
Landi also urged the board to restrict parking on the narrow street, in part because “Frank’s Home Improvement employees monopolize parking and the handicapped entrance to the medical building is frequently blocked.”
But after the street was made one-way, it quickly became apparent that the board had solved one problem and created another.
AJ Anthony, whose family owns the Citgo station, complained at several board meetings that the new traffic flow pattern was hurting their business and forced tanker trucks delivering gas to make an awkward right turn off Route 9 that blocked Gordon Avenue and added to traffic congestion.
“I understand the gas station’s issues,” said Gordon Avenue resident Claire Davis. “It is scary to make a right turn off Route 9 onto Gordon because the cars behind you are coming so fast. I’ve never had to do that and I’ve lived here all my life.”
The Citgo owners circulated a petition urging the board to reverse its decision.
Village administrator Anthony Giaccio said the village is in talks with the New York Department of Transportation to closely examine the entire intersection of Old Broadway, Route 9, Gordon and Dell Avenues. In the meantime, the board’s decision to remove four parking spaces on Old Broadway will remain in effect.
