Sister Elizabeth Marie McCarthy

Sr. Elizabeth Marie McCarthy, a Sister of Mercy for 66 years, entered eternal life on Monday, February 13, 2023, in White Plains Hospital. Born to Jeremiah and Elizabeth (Flanagan) McCarthy on January 29, 1932, she is survived by her sister, Elizabeth Connolly, and her many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. She was pre-deceased by her sister, Nancy and brothers Jeremiah and Patrick. Katherine entered the Sisters of Mercy in Tarrytown on September 8, 1956, and on August 16, 1957 received her religious name, Sr. Elizabeth Marie. She was a proud alumnae of Fordham University receiving her Bachelor of Science Degree in 1953 and her Master of Science Degree in 1964.

Sr. Elizabeth Marie’s ministry began as a teacher at St. Simon Stock and St. Francis Xavier Schools, Bronx, NY, and continued in service to children with special needs in Our Lady of Lourdes School in New York City, and Mercy College, Dobbs Ferry, NY. Her dedication to children and families brought her to the next phase of her ministry in Social Services in New York City, Yonkers, White Plains and Mount Vernon. The people of Sacred Heart Parish in Mount Vernon were blessed by her devotion, humor and love for more than thirty years. Sr. Elizabeth Marie lived the Works of Mercy and shared her gifts with all those who had the privilege of knowing her.

Funeral services for Sr. Elizabeth Marie will be held at Marian Woods Convent, 152 Ridge Road, Hartsdale, NY. Reception of her body will take place on Friday, February 17, at 2:30 p.m. and a Prayer Service will follow at 3:30 p.m. The Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Saturday, February 18, at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sisters of Mercy, 150 Ridge Road, Hartsdale, N.Y. 10530.
