Phelps Wins Intramural Northwell Cook-Off

May 2, 2024

Northwell Health takes its food seriously. Pitting hospital against hospital, the healthcare giant is in its 12th year of sponsoring a Chef’s Challenge in which teams of chefs, cooks and dietitians from among its 21 medical facilities vie for the top spot. This year, three teams got to the finals: Lenox Hill in Manhattan, a combined team from Plainview and Syosset Hospitals on Long Island and Phelps.

Each group of culinary masters were given just 90 minutes to whip up an appetizer, an entrée and dessert while following Northwell’s rigorous nutrition guidelines. In the end, it was Phelps, led by Executive Chef Andrew Cain, that took top honors.

Featured ion the history photo above are: left to right: Michael Dowling, Northwell’s President and CEO; Jill Kalman, MD, Chief Medical Officer and Deputy Physician-in-Chief, Northwell Health; Marcus Samuelsson, Celebrity Chef, Restaurateur and Cookbook Author; Bruno Tison, VP, Systems Food Services & Corporate Executive Chef, Northwell Health; Kelly Walker, Executive Sous Chef, Phelps Hospital; Andrew Cain, Regional Executive Chef, Phelps Hospital and the rest of the Phelps Hospital winning team.
