July 27, 2023

Paul Maccabee, beloved husband and father, passed away on July 24. He was 79.

Paul was born to Rachel and Samuel Maccabee in Brooklyn, NY on April 13, 1944, three years ahead of his brother George. The boys lost their dad in 1951.

After attending Albion College, Paul graduated from Boston University School of Medicine. During an internship at the Philadelphia General Hospital, he met Peggy, the love of his life. The two have been inseparable for fifty-two years.

Drafted near the end of Vietnam, Paul did a stint in the Navy, stationed in South Carolina, followed by a Residency in Neurology at Boston University and a fellowship at MGH.

Paul was Professor of Neurology at SUNY Downstate Medical Center directing the EMG lab, and was associated with Kings County Hospital. Respected by colleagues and students, he was also liked by the patients he served. Paul was active in the clinical and research aspects of his field and pioneered use of magnetic coil stimulation to diagnose nerve disease with many published scientific papers.

Paul loved traveling, hiking (especially in Kauai), film, literature, Star Wars, and spending time with his family. He has been talking about climate change for decades to anyone who would listen.

Paul is survived by his wife Peggy and children Jonathan, Laura and Claire. Words cannot explain how much he’ll be missed. He was predeceased by his brother George.
