James J. Hart, Sr., a former longtime treasurer in the Village of Tarrytown and a former trustee in the Village of Sleepy Hollow, died Feb. 6. He was 77.
A longtime resident of Sleepy Hollow, he was born in the Bronx on Sept. 2, 1948 to James J. and Ida (Calitri) Hart.
After settling in North Tarrytown, Mr. Hart became very involved in both Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown. Most of his career was being the treasurer of the Village of Tarrytown, where he retired after more than 40 years of service.
Prior to that, he had been an Assistant Treasurer in Sleepy Hollow. In retirement, he became part-time Treasurer for the Greenville Fire Department.
Mr. Hart also volunteered on the Board of the Community Opportunity Center in Tarrytown. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aeries 1042. He will be remembered for his love of Country Music, but mostly for being a loving and wonderful grandfather to the lights of his life, Ashlee and James J. Hart III
Besides his grandchildren, he is survived by his loving son and daughter-in-law, James J. Hart, Jr. (Jennifer), and his sisters Elizabeth Wabnitz and Jo-Anne Hart. He was predeceased by his sister Carol Frerick and his brother Edward Hart.
Visitation will be at Coffey Funeral Home on Thurs., Feb. 12 from 4 to 8 p.m. His Funeral Mass will be at Transfiguration Church on Fri., Feb. 13 at 10:30 a.m., followed by interment in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
