Green Teamers Transform Community … and Themselves

November 26, 2021

The Green Team program hires local teenagers enrolled in the Yonkers Public School system for environmental jobs – for many, their first real job. The program focuses on leadership, group dynamics, and a variety of conservation and construction skills. This hard work is tempered with amazing adventures, like hiking, camping, and swimming.

The Green Team begins their summer work in Yonkers. With projects that include building community gardens, cleaning the Saw Mill River, removing invasive species, and mapping a new bike trail, they learn first-hand how to make a real difference in their neighborhoods.

To put this work in context, the Green Team also spends time working on public lands. These trips include wilderness camping, canoeing, and night hikes, as well as trail restoration and park conservation in places like Yellowstone National Park, The Grand Canyon, Gateway National Recreation Area, and Wallkill National Wildlife Refuge.

Working alongside National Park Service and US Fish & Wildlife Service rangers, this program opens participants up to a variety of career opportunities. For some, it is the launching pad for a career in conservation.
