HEALTHY LIFE SERIES CONTINUES IN SEPTEMBER AT PHELPS HOSPITAL

SLEEPY HOLLOW, New York –Phelps Hospital’s Healthy Life seriesoffers the community a wide range of programs on health-related subjects as well as numerous health screenings and support groups. All events are free and take place on the Phelps campus, 701 N. Broadway in Sleepy Hollow unless otherwise noted. The Phelps Healthy Life Calendar for September is as follows:
Wednesday, September 4 – Mind Games 1st Wednesday of the month Mind Games is a fun way for seniors to stimulate various cognitive functions memory, problem-solving, and focus. If you are having trouble remembering things or feel that you are easily confused, come join the fun! 2:00pm in the Boardroom/”C” level. Thursday, September 5 & 19 – Bereavement Support Group A group in which members receive the emotional, educational and social support needed to successfully manage their issues. Wednesday, September 11 & 25 – Meditation Meditation can remove stress and replace it with a does of inner peace. It’s one of the best tools we have to balance our emotions, deal with physical and psychological distress, and promote the peace of the present moment. Thursday, September 12 – Osteoporosis Program Osteoporosis Education and Support Program is for people concerned about bone loss and fractures. Physicians, therapists and dietitians meet to discuss risk factors, causes, proper body mechanics and medication options. Thursday, September 12 – Breakfast Club (Depression and Isolation) Is a series of breakfast meetings designed especially for seniors. Each program includes a free breakfast, a presentation on healthy lifestyles topic and a light exercise program to improve strength and balance. It’s also a great opportunity for older adults to socialize with their peers. This program will be held at 10:00 am in the Cafeteria at Phelps Hospital. 701 N. Broadway, Sleepy Hollow. Friday, September 13 – Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support GroupAlzheimer’s disease is life changing for both those who are diagnosed and those close to them. Thursday, September 19 – Communal Disaster Training Exercise Phelps Hospital and the Village of Tarrytown will conduct a disaster training exercise in the late afternoon of September 19, which will take 2-3 hours. The scenario for this exercise will involve a transportation incident. We are seeking community volunteers to participate in the exercise in the roles of simulated victims, news media and family members. Volunteers can be of any age 16 and above. Wednesday, September 25 – Women’s Health and Fitness Day Regular physical activity can alleviate many health problems, such as high blood pressure and diabetes. It also strengthens muscles, which can help prevent falls. If you are like many Americans, you may think you are too busy to exercise, but there are many ways to fit more physical activity into your life. The good news is that it’s never too late to start. You can begin slowly and work toward getting the recommended amount of exercise for your age for the most benefit. Saturday, September 28 – CarFit for Older Driver Safety An individualized 20-minute interactive and educational program designed to improve older driver safety and enable older adults to continue driving for as long as possible. The trained CarFit team, members of Phelps’ Occupational Therapy Department, work with participants to ensure the safest “fit” for drivers and their vehicles. This includes having a clear line of sight over the steering wheel, a properly fitted seat belt, and correctly positioned mirrors to minimize blind spots. 9:00 am (last appointment is 11:00 am) – rain or shine; Phelps parking garage, 3rd floor. ABCs of Baby CareThis class for expectant parentsis to help you prepare for your new baby’s arrival. Topics covered included how to diaper and bathe a baby, equipment needed such as a car seat, crib safety, guidelines for safe sleep, newborn characteristics and appearance, general baby care and more. This class is offered once a month. Classes are held at 7:00 pm. Please see registration form for details. $50 per couple. Prenatal Breastfeeding ClassThis class for expectant parentsoffers information on how to initiate successful breastfeeding. Topics include milk supply and how milk is made, what to expect from your newborn, latch and positioning, how to tell if your baby is getting enough milk and more. Couples are encouraged to come together. Taught by International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC). $50 per couple.
