Two incumbents and an active community member were chosen by the Village of Tarrytown Democratic Committee to run for three available seats on the Tarrytown Board of Trustees on March 15.

Trustees Robert Hoyt and Mary McGee will both be seeking their sixth two-year term on the board, while Karen Brown, who has served on the village Zoning Board of Appeals since 2006, will be vying to succeed trustee and Deputy Mayor Tom Basher, who fell one year short of serving a quarter century on the Village Board.

Basher, who considered himself the elder statesmen of the board, said the board has accomplished a lot together, especially in the last 10 years.

“It’s been a great run. It takes a whole team,” said Basher, who was recently inducted into the Westchester County Senior Hall of Fame. “It’s a much more vibrant community now than when I first got elected, and that takes a lot of people. The village can always be better off. A new broom always sweeps clean.”

Brown is hoping to provide those fresh ideas. Since 2008, she and her husband, Kevin, have co-owned Hudson Barter Exchange, which serves hundreds of small businesses in the region.

“I would like to be a liaison to the Tarrytown business community on issues that will help existing businesses thrive and to bring new enterprise in the village,” said Brown, who has lived in Tarrytown for 20 years. “I truly believe that Tarrytown’s success is rooted in many smart, dedicated residents working together on the gamut of important issues. I would like to increase community outreach to get even more Tarrytown residents onto village committees and boards thus ensuring Tarrytown’s prosperity into the future.”

Hoyt, a senior manager at Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, is a lifelong village resident and a member of the Tarrytown Volunteer Fire Department Consolidated Engine Co. #1 for the last 34 years.

“Over the past 10 years, I have had the privilege of serving our great village as village trustee. We have been a part of making numerous positive changes in our village,” Hoyt said. “Among many accomplishments: we’ve obtained over $12 million in grant monies for repairing the village’s Hudson River shoreline, rehabilitating and expanding our waterfront parks and restoring the Andre Brook; maintained 10 years of responsible and conservative budgets without sacrificing services; received an upgrade in our bond rating from A1 to Aa2, while staying under the state tax cap. We added two new parking lots in the downtown area that has provided over 35 spaces, and we are in the process of completing a state-of-the-art recreation facility that will benefit the entire community.”

McGee is hoping to continue moving Tarrytown forward and meeting the needs of a growing village.

“Working as a member of a proactive Board, I have been involved in many projects, including the building of Village Hall and two firehouses on the south end of the Village, improvements to our parks and new parks, two new centrally located parking lots and the continuing work being done to improve our infrastructure,” McGee said. “Since I always keep my eyes on the bottom line, I am proud that we have kept our budgets under the Governor’s tax cap. I have worked with a number of our citizen committees. These committees offer a wide range of interests and knowledge to help better our community. I am seeking reelection because I want to see all the good work and progress continue.”

Tarrytown United will be cross-endorsing the Democratic slate. Once the Independent Party petitions have the requisite number of approved signatures, the cross-endorsement will be confirmed in mid-February.
