About the last place anyone would expect to see a mini golf course is inside a library. Whether called miniature golf, mini golf or crazy golf, the game’s history from the early 20th century places it mostly out-of-doors.
However, Warner Library in Tarrytown is about to change that formula on Saturday, September 27, by hosting its first annual “Headless Halloween Mini Golf” – inside its doors. Putters in hand, golfers will be able to play two different nine hole golf courses, as the library staff describes them, “set up in the book stacks and throughout the library.” How many volumes will line the “fairways” has not been disclosed, but surely a new page will have been turned.
“The Library Board wanted to host a fundraiser that was accessible to everyone in the villages and tied into the community enthusiasm associated with Halloween,” Library Director Maureen Petry explained. Funds raised by the event will go toward the renovation of the third floor community rooms, according to Petry. Since they were constructed in 1979, the rooms have not been updated.
“An atmospheric family friendly course” will be open to parents and kids from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the Saturday of the “Headless Halloween Mini Golf.” But for those wanting to play a course that is described as a “truly terrifying Halloween version,” doors will reopen at 6 p.m.
The library is looking for local businesses to sponsor holes and for volunteers. Tickets are available now at any public service desk at the library.
