Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow Earth Day Plans Shape Up

Mark your calendars for one – or more – of the Earth Day events on Saturday, April 21st in and around Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow. Rain date will be the following day.
The Tarrytown Environmental Advisory Council (TEAC), in cooperation with the Village of Tarrytown, is hosting a number of fun, interesting, and educational participatory activities, in which they hope everyone will participate:
> 8am: Birdwatching Walk at the Tarrytown Lakes with Ornithologist Dr. Carole Griffiths. Catch a glimpse of the huge variety of bird species and wildlife in this NYS environmentally-protected area. Meet at Lakes parking lot on Neperan Road.
> 9am-12pm: Two Clean-up Efforts – Neperan Park (75 Neperan Rd.) or Sheldon Ave at Lincoln Ave. Wear boots/sturdy shoes, a hat, long sleeves, and bring gloves and water.
> 9am: Hike and Trail Marking – Meet at Park and Ride lot near old pump-house to help clear and blaze a forgotten trail. Wear hiking boots, hat, long sleeves, and bring gloves, and water. Limit 10 people, so be sure to sign up.
> 10am-12pm: Tree Planting, “An Edible Forest,” focusing on native edible trees and shrubs at 75 Neperan Rd across from Altamont Ave. Tools will be provided, but you can bring yours if you like.
> 10am-2pm: RiverWalk Clean-up – Meet at the bottom of West Main for trash pick-up, weeding and readying the park for spring and summer use. All in honor of Katharine W. Davis. Refreshments will be served.
> 10am-3pm: Lakes Clean-up – Meet at parking lot. Wear boots/sturdy shoes, a hat, long sleeves, bring gloves, and water.
> 12-2pm: Metal Detecting at Wilson Park. Meet the Putnam and Westchester Detectorists and Archeological Society (http://www.greattreasure.com). Learn the art of metal detecting and uncover some local treasures.
> 1:30-2:30pm: Meet-and-Greet with County Executive George Latimer at Coffee Labs on Main Street to discuss environmental issues in Westchester.
>All day: Earth Day Happy Hour at the Oath – selected $5 Draft Beer
> 3-6pm: (Bring your own) Picnic at Pierson Park with food vendors and free music by The Kennedys (http://www.kennedysmusic.com)
> 8pm-9pm: Lights Out – Dine by Candlelight (at participating local restaurants)

> 10am-12pm: TEAC’s Sleepy Hollow sibling SHEAC joins the Peabody Preserve Outdoor Classroom for an Earth Day event that will be fun for the whole family! Activities include:
> Peabody Butterfly and Pollinator Garden Open House
> Identifying Exotic Invasive Species Trail Walk
> Sprouts! Join the Peabody naturalist’s Spring Nature Walk to discover emerging flora and fauna. Fun for kids K-5!
> Brownie Troop Information Booth on STEM Outdoor and Citizen Science Projects
> Look For the Zero! Healthy Lawn Care and Lawn Fertilizer initiative to help protect our local water system.
> Learn about including native and pollinator plants in your home landscape.
> Plus Fairy House building!
The Peabody Preserve Outdoor Classroom is on North Broadway in Sleepy Hollow, between Philipse Manor and Sleepy Hollow Manor.
Finally, within participating businesses and organizations all over the Tarrytown, you’ll see TEAC’s “Green This Tree” posters, on which you can stick a “leaf” with your written pledge for our environment. TEAC, SHEAC, and the Villages thank you for all the help you can give to make our communities thrive.
