William Luney, 80

William Ross Luney, a resident of Tarrytown, died April 3. He was 80.

Mr. Luney was raised in Peoria, Illinois served in the U.S. Navy from 1953 to 1956. He began his legal career at Sullivan and Cromwell in New York City and went on to serve as legal counsel for Bristol-Myers Squibb until his retirement as vice president and secretary of the corporation. He then practiced privately for the next decade.

Mr. Luney was a longtime member and had been chairman of the Zoning Board of Appeals in Tarrytown. He was a member of the Sleepy Hollow Country Club in Scarborough, where he served a president from 1978 to 1980. He had also been a member of the New York Athletic Club.

John Fico, 75

John R. Fico, a Tarrytown resident for 42 years, died April 11. He was 75.

Mr. Fico worked for Greenwich International in New York City and was very active in the Tarrytown community. He served as president of Dads’ Club (baseball), president of Pop Warner Football and president of HUD Board and ran for village trustee.

Robert Rizzi, 73

Robert Daniel Rizzi, a longtime Tarrytown resident, died suddenly April 1 in Palm Beach, Florida. He was 73.

Mr. Rizzi grew up in Tarrytown and attended North Tarrytown High School, where he served as president and graduated with honors as class valedictorian in 1955. He was appointed to the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1959 and was awarded a BS degree in engineering and a commission as second lieutenant in the U.S. Army.

He married his high school sweetheart, Anne Elizabeth Brennan, at Transfiguration Church. After serving in Germany during the Berlin Crisis, he returned to Tarrytown and became active in community affairs, serving as a trustee and earning several community service awards.

Barbara Higle, 79


Barbara D. Higle, a longtime teacher in Tarrytown, died March 31 in Daytona Beach, Florida. She was 79.

Mrs. Higle was born in Tarrytown and graduated from Washington Irving High School in 1948. She graduated from Cazenovia Junior College and received her Bachelor of Science in Education from Mills College of Education. She was a kindergarten teacher for the Public Schools of The Tarrytowns for more than 20 years.

While in Tarrytown, she was very involved with the PTA, was a Girl Scouts leader, and a member of the Tarrytowners. She and her husband retired to Daytona Beach in 1986.

Jim Reiche, 89

Jim Reiche, an active member of the Rotary Club of the Tarrytowns, died April 6. He was 89.

He was born in Yonkers and graduated from Lafayette College. He served as an officer in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and had a distinguished career at Refined Syrups & Sugars, retiring as production manager and technical products manager.

Mr. Reiche was active in the community, serving multiple non-profit organizations, including the Rotary Club of the Tarrytowns, which he joined in 1995. In fact, when the Rotary Club started the Duck Derby, Mr. Reiche numbered all 1,200 ducks at his home. This year’s Duck Derby was dedicated in Mr. Reiche’s memory.
