Local Artist Captures Beauty of River in Mural at Hudson Harbor

A stunning mural of the Hudson River, Palisades Skyline and the Tappan Zee Bridge will soon be permanently installed in the lobby of the Stonehouse, part of the Hudson Harbor development.

Painted by Tarrytown artist Cathi Locati, the mural, entitled “Working Water,” shows the river working, full of life and color. The painting, commissioned by the developers of Hudson Harbor, was specifically designed in size and color to fit the space.

“The painting literally depicts the view you see when you walk out the building, but the colors were selected to match the buildings and their décor,” Locati said.

The large scale oil painting is unique in that most murals are painted on a wall, while Locati’s creation is painted on 19 feet of continuous canvas.

“Most murals get painted over when changes are made to a building, but this one is painted on canvas so it can be moved if necessary,” she said.

In addition, the mural’s composition allows it to be cut into three pieces and hung separately or together should the need arise for it to fill a smaller space.

Raised in Montana, Locati moved to New York in 2007 “to be in the epicenter of the art world.” A fine art painter specializing in custom made art; she has been painting for more than 30 years. Her work has been showcased on the West Coast and the East Coast, including at the Amsterdam Whitney Gallery in New York in 2007. A Locati original oil painting titled “Destination Unknown” sold at an auction for $38,000.

Despite being an accomplished artist, “Working Water” marked the first time Locati painted water on a large scale.

“I must have painted over this canvas seven times, adding layer after layer of color to get the water to be translucent and to depict movement,” she said, noting she painted on location for six months, working from 250 photographs as reference.

Locati creates custom made fine art on commission and said she particularly enjoys “pulling ideas out of peoples’ heads” and creating art that matches its surroundings. For more information, visit www.cathilocati.com or call (914) 659-7777.
