A community grant will help a local group expand its commitment to seniors with a new service. ITAV10591, the group of volunteers dedicated to helping seniors live independently in their homes, has received a $12,000 grant from the Westchester Community Foundation. The WCF is a division of the New York Community Trust, one of the largest community foundations in the country. The purpose of the grant is to help ITAV add something new to its menu of services.
One year ago this month, ITAV launched its first service, free rides to members anywhere in Westchester County. A Service Coordinator takes ride requests from members and matches them up with volunteer drivers. Drivers are thoroughly vetted, ensuring a safe, comfortable ride for seniors. Since the program began, volunteers have taken dozens of seniors to doctor’s appointments, grocery shopping, anywhere they have to go. The number of free rides has grown from the single digits at the start to nearly 50 a month now. Members have praised the volunteer drivers for their efficiency and courtesy.
After successfully implementing this flagship service, ITAV volunteers are ready to do more. The group will soon launch a “helping hands” service where volunteers will go to seniors’ homes to help with small chores and repairs that they may no longer be able to do themselves. This includes things like snow removal, AC set up and removal, changing a car battery, thermostat, smoke detector or light bulb, picture hanging, putting up or taking down window screens. As with drivers, volunteers going to people’s homes will be thoroughly screened and vetted. To qualify for this service, you must be an ITAV member. Membership is only 25-dollars a year and you can become a member, or make a contribution, by sending a check to P.O. Box 8304, Sleepy Hollow, NY 10591.
In order to continue expanding the ride service and to implement the new helping hands service, ITAV needs more volunteers. It is looking for people who can spend a few hours a week as a service coordinator, driver or helping hands worker. The need is great and urgent. If you would like to become an ITAV volunteer, please send an email to info@itav10591 or call 914-222-5116. For information on ITAV itself, visit the website at www.itav10591.org.
The ITAV Board would like to thank the many people and groups in 10591 that have contributed to the organization’s success. Whether it’s donations of money, like from the Rivertown Runners and other groups, or donations of other things, like the use of space by the Reformed Church of the Tarrytowns, the community has recognized a need to help our seniors live independently and it has come forward in a very generous way.
